Staff Attorney: Social Security Disability and Public Assistance Benefits

Requirements:

  • Members in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii are preferred. Applications from highly qualified individuals sitting for the February 2024 bar exam, as well as attorneys licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 will be considered.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice and experience working with houseless, disabled and/or low-income populations strongly preferred.
  • Desire to develop litigation or administrative agency advocacy skills required.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with a diverse team of co-workers.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations.
  • Experience working with or interacting with individuals with physical and/or psychological disabilities is a plus.
  • Organizational skills to manage a busy practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in a language spoken by recent immigrants, such as Spanish, Chuukese, Thai, Laotian and Korean is desired although not a requirement.

$102,597 – $133,373 a year – Full-time

Duties

As a General Attorney, you will:

  • Performs extensive legal research and provides legal advice and assistance for general law matters to include, but not limited to personnel law, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), and employee labour, discipline, or performance actions; fiscal law; property law (real and personal); Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act; and standards of conduct for the Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center (EMCBC) and representative sites.
  • Renders legal advice and reviews in connection with all aspects annotated above, and any associated administrative proceedings or litigation.
  • Provide legal advice during contract formation and contract performance on particularly complex and sensitive contracts.

  • Employees must maintain active bar membership while employed as an attorney with DOE.
  • This position is NOT included in a Bargaining Agreement.
  • Subject to the appropriate background investigation to determine suitability or fitness for federal employment. Continued employment is contingent upon favourable adjudications of periodic reinvestigations, if applicable.
