Georgia Criminal Defense Lawyers Association

The most significant association for attorneys in Georgia who represent the accused has been the Georgia Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (GACDL) since 1974. GACDL, the biggest member-funded state-wide criminal defense organization in the nation, is made up of full-time criminal investigators, law students, and criminal defense attorneys who are united in their desire to protect the constitutional guarantees of justice in the criminal justice system. GACDL speaks up in the courts, legislature, and community to promote just and efficient criminal justice.

Mission Success

To advance justice and fairness through public outreach, member education, services, and support, as well as a dedication to providing high-quality representation for all.

Objectives

  • To establish a suitable state organization that represents legal representatives actively involved in criminal defense.
  • To promote ongoing improvement in the criminal justice system’s management.
  • To enhance the criminal justice system and look for more efficient ways to rehabilitate individuals found guilty of crimes.
  • To strengthen the legal system and promote the recruitment of qualified and seasoned lawyers to the bench.

Here is a brief history of the Georgia Criminal Defense Lawyers Association

William W. “Bill” Daniel came up with the concept for GACDL on September 6, 1974, while having breakfast with Rees Smith, Al Horn, Dick Rubin, Glen Zell, and Walter Henritze. A second meeting, held on September 19, created a dues program, affirmed policies and objectives, and drew and filed Articles of Incorporation with the Secretary of State on September 10.

During the third meeting on September 25, a temporary board of directors and executives formally announced that they were prepared to lead the new organization during its first seminar on December 6 and 7, 1974, in Atlanta.

Funding

The GACDL is in favor of funding levels sufficient to give the accused the zealous representation guaranteed by the Constitution.

Regarding lawyer caseload sizes, GACDL endorses ABA guidelines. Every plan to place public defenders on vacation is fiercely opposed by GACDL.

Due to the particular nature of death sentence cases in the legal profession, enough financing as well as suitably qualified and experienced solicitors are crucial; the funding available at this time is completely insufficient.
